On November 6, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University (NCAT) hosted a virtual hybrid event focused on advancing student engagement in fluid power education. The event, led by NCAT faculty and NFPA Vice President of Workforce Development, Stephanie Scaccianoce, provided an in-depth look at NCAT’s expanding fluid power curriculum and industry partnership opportunities aimed at preparing students for impactful careers.
Professor Dr. Paul Akangah introduced two key courses in the fluid power curriculum: Fluid Power I and Fluid Power Lab. These courses, which focus on hydraulic and pneumatic system fundamentals, offer students essential hands-on learning through lab-based activities and projects. Dr. Akangah outlined the academic path for students entering NCAT’s Mechanical Engineering Program, highlighting resources like advanced software, laboratory facilities, and a fully equipped machine shop. He also recommended subsequent courses to help students gain a competitive edge in the fluid power industry.
Throughout the event, students and industry representatives exchanged ideas on career pathways and skills development. The student president of NCAT’s Fluid Power Club, shared the club’s plans for the academic year, detailing how membership has broadened students’ understanding of fluid power applications. Club members also highlighted projects they’re undertaking, including the Fluid Power Vehicle Challenge. Insights from an intern at Danfoss Power Solutions and a Vehicle Challenge participant offered students a look at real-world applications of fluid power and the valuable experience these projects provide.
With over 30 students in attendance, Dr. Akangah noted strong engagement in the event. Student leaders from fluid power clubs across campus introduced themselves, sharing what drew them to fluid power and discussing the innovative projects they’ve been a part of.
NFPA would like to thank the following member companies for attending and supporting NCAT’s educational efforts: Bosch Rexroth, Danfoss Power Solutions, GPM Controls LLC, Wandfluh of America, and Womack Machine Supply Co.
As a designated NFPA Power Partner University, NCAT is home to both a Fluid Power Club and a Fluid Power Vehicle Challenge team. NFPA collaborates with educational institutions nationwide to foster fluid power education, and we invite those interested in supporting or joining these initiatives to connect with us.
