Progress Made on Pump, Pneumatic Control Standards at Spring ISO Meetings

A series of fluid power systems ISO standards development meetings were recently held in London. Along with an all-experts meeting, two subcommittees (product testing and control products) and 12 working groups met to further the developmental progress on current projects, systematic reviews of published standards, and to discuss possible new areas of work within the fluid power industry.

Forty-five committee members representing the fluid power industry attended the week-long meetings. Seven U.S. experts from NFPA member companies who participate on various U.S. Technical Advisory Groups (TAGs) attended on behalf of the U.S. fluid power industry. The remaining delegates traveled from China, Japan, the Netherlands, Italy, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom.

US. Led Meeting Highlights

In addition to the progress reports that were given from each of the Working Groups (WGs), the chairman of the fluid power systems technical committee, Gary Baumgardner of Parker Hannifin U.S.A., invited Germany to give a presentation regarding ISO 18582-1 Fluid power — Specification of reference dictionary — Part 1: General overview on organization and structure and ISO 18528-2, Fluid power — Specifications of reference dictionary — Part 2: Classes’ and properties’ definitions for pneumatics. The ISO 18582 series contains methodology and properties that can be used in industrial automation and are used for IoT/Industry 4.0.

David Phillips of SMC is the convenor of SC 1/WG 2 on fluid power vocabulary. WG 2 continues the work on ISO 5598, Fluid power vocabulary. Many new terms and definitions have been added to the document. An updated version of ISO 5598 will be published soon.

SC 8/WG 13, Positive-displacement pumps, motors and integral transmissions – Method of testing, is led by John Jones of Parker Hannifin. Along with developing a model testing sample size technical report, WG 13 is very close to publishing an updated version of ISO 4409, Hydraulic fluid power — Positive-displacement pumps, motors and integral transmissions — Methods of testing and presenting basic steady state performance

The committee members are also working to update ISO 9110-1, Hydraulic fluid power — Measurement techniques — Part 1: General measurement principles, and ISO 9110-2, Hydraulic fluid power — Measurement techniques — Part 2: Measurement of average steady-state pressure in a closed conduit.

Mary Dyksterhouse of Parker Hannifin is the new convenor of SC 5/WG 3 on Pneumatic control products. Along with continuing to move current projects forward, the WG continues the work on the ISO 6358 five-part series, General rules and test methods for determining flow-rate characteristics of pneumatic components. The experts continue to collaborate to develop effective conductance. This term essentially simplifies sonic conductance down to one valve.

Continuing the Development Process

NFPA members are encouraged to participate in fluid power industry standards development. Whether at the national and/or international level, your engineering expertise is needed

  • to help influence global technology;
  • give expert input;
  • be a part of the U.S. voice in an international arena.
