Iowa State University faculty, Dr. Brian Steward was team leader in designing and creating the Off-Highway Vehicle Chassis Dynamometer Laboratory (Dyno Lab). Located in the heart of the Midwest, it is an excellent tool for manufacturers and students within the area.
This Dyno lab will be one of few facilities used to test large farm and construction machinery. “With any vehicle, it gets tested extensively before it goes to the marketplace,” Steward said. The goal is to test the performance of these large off-highway vehicles in hopes of designing more efficient and effective machinery. The Dyno lab was built with generous support from Danfoss. The Dyno lab is administered by Iowa State University’s Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering (ISU ABE) just outside of Ames, Iowa. Students within the ABE program at ISU will have the opportunity to use this lab to conduct their own research. According to Steward, “ISU students can now gain experience with cutting-edge equipment so that when they are in the industry, they are familiar with the testing process.”
Iowa State University has had a long relationship with the NFPA, including being a part of our Power Partner University Program. This program is designed to showcase universities that provide a high level of fluid power education on top of participating in several NFPA programs. ISU is a powerhouse for providing fluid power education. And with the help of this Dyno Lab, ISU students will graduate with the necessary skills needed to join the fluid power industry.
