A Guide For Manufacturing Day 2022

Manufacturing Day (MFG Day) is a celebration of modern manufacturing meant to energize and inspire the next generation of skilled workers and is an initiative of The Manufacturing Institute, a workforce development of the National Association of Manufacturers.

Manufacturing Day is officially the first Friday of October, this year it is on Friday, October 7th, but many companies celebrate Manufacturing Day all month long. Manufacturing Day was started ten years ago to address common misconceptions about working in the manufacturing industry by creating a collective movement that connects manufacturers with the future workforce, educators, parents, and community leaders to showcase the potential of modern manufacturing and foster interest in manufacturing careers.

Facility tours have traditionally been part of MFG Day celebrations. The following activities can also be used to reach out to students and introduce them to fluid power and careers in the industry:

  • Employee Q & A: Engineers discuss with students what a day in life is like, how they got into the industry, etc.
  • Shadow Day: Matches students interested in the sector with manufacturing professionals for a day of learning and networking. The event allows students to experience a workday and develop connections in the manufacturing community.
  • Team Project: Engineers work with students to help assemble a basic fluid power classroom kit.
  • Company Video or a Virtual Information Session: Companies host a in-person or virtual session with students and share a video with educators and students

The NFPA encourages companies and educators to celebrate Manufacturing Day all year long by opening their doors to students to attract the next generation of manufacturing professionals. NFPA can help connect you with schools in your community to plan activities.

If you’re interested in hosting an MFG Day event or activity or want more information on MFG day, please contact NFPA Workforce Program Manager Eric Pannell at epannell@nfpa.com.
