Development of ISO Standards Continues for Contamination Control, Connectors, and Terms and Symbols Committees

The U.S. Technical Advisory Groups (TAGs) for contamination control (TC 131/SC 6), connectors (TC 131/SC 4) and terms and symbols (SC 1/WG 2) met recently to continue the ISO standardization work in fluid power systems. More than 30 NFPA TAG and SAE connector and filter test engineering experts attended in-person or virtually. Both NFPA and non-NFPA members, representing many fluid power-related companies, were in attendance, including SMC, H&V, Lydall, Donaldson, Pall, Parker, Cummins, Eaton, Danfoss, Caterpillar and Holmbury.

In the international arena, the U.S. TAG develops and advocates for the U.S. position in fluid power standards. Here is a sample of the projects currently under development:

  • ISO 11171, Calibration of automatic particle counters for liquids.
Discussions continue between the international experts on the best possible path forward to publish an updated document taking into consideration the new and future SRM2806d test fluids currently being developed by NIST. A technical report will also be published to explain the methodology behind the updates needed in ISO 11171.
  • ISO 6162-1:2012 [Hydraulic fluid power — Flange connections with split or one-piece flange clamps and metric or inch screws — Part 1: Flange connectors, ports, and mounting surfaces for use at pressures of 3,5 MPa (35 bar) to 35 MPa (350 bar), DN 13 to DN 127]
Discussion continues in a taskforce of U. S. and German experts on suggested future drawing and material changes.
  • ISO 5598, Fluid power systems and components – Vocabulary.
Work has begun to update the document with additional terms and definitions.

The next U.S. TAG to TC 131/SC 6 and TC 131/SC 4 meetings will be held in a hybrid format in the March/April timeframe. Other U.S. TAGs continue to meet virtually as needed.
