Last February, NFPA partnered with the Center for Compact and Efficient Fluid Power (CCEFP) to coordinate visits to Congressional offices to advocate for new federal funding for fluid power research. Representatives from eight NFPA member companies joined NFPA and CCEFP on visits to 20 different offices on both the Senate and House side of the Capitol. The result? Language to create a $5 million fluid power research program in the Vehicle Technologies Office of the U.S. Department of Energy has been included in current version of the relevant federal budget bill. However, given the political situation in Washington, that bill has not yet come to the floor, and the government is operating under the terms of a continuing resolution on last year’s budget.

We are now working to schedule a return trip to Capitol Hill, during the week of February 27, 2017, to reinforce the need for keeping this language and for the passage of the bill, which may come to the floor before the continuing resolution expires at the end of April. Any NFPA member company that supports this effort is welcome to send a representative to join us on this trip. The more Congressional offices we can visit, each representing districts in which our member companies have production facilities and jobs, the greater our chance of success.

Time is of the essence. Contact me at elanke@nfpa.com or 414-778-3351 if someone in your organization is interested in participating.
