Project Applies Alternating Flow AC Hydraulics to Pump/Motor Technology

The fluid power research projects coming out of the Center for Compact and Efficient Fluid Power (CCEFP) have continued to progress, and all ten of the newly funded projects were presented at the CCEFP Industry-University Summit in April 2017. The AC Hydraulic Pump/Motor project was presented by Mengtang Li, a graduate student at Vanderbilt University, and Ryan Foss, a graduate student at the University of Minnesota. The first design prototype has been built and tested.

Project Premise: Hydraulic systems today can best be classified as DC, or direct flow, hydraulics. This project has been investigating the modeling, design, and development of AC hydraulic systems. This project has also built upon the existing CCEFP variable linkage piston pump that is both compact and efficient even under low displacement operating conditions. It is expected to expand the existing body of knowledge for applying existing variable displacement pumps to alternating flow AC hydraulic circuits, including multi-actuator systems.

Recent Progress and Next Steps: The simulation model for the project is built and is in validation. The first prototype has also been built and tested and the baseline experiments for efficiency comparison are already complete. The next steps for the project include:

  • Exploration of the parameter space.
  • Optimization of the design.
