NFPA Member, Triton College in Illinois, hosted 32 middle school students from one of their local schools for National Manufacturing Day. Antigone Sharris, engineering technology coordinator at the college, organized Triton’s event which included a demonstration of a laser cutter/engraver. On the same day, across the country, 3,000 middle and high school students in Florida took tours of 95 companies on National Manufacturing Day. NFPA Member, Fabco-Air, hosted 25 high school students and taught them about the company’s pneumatic products to promote high-tech careers. Scot LaMar, vice-president of Fabco-Air, held up a valve that controls the flow on the Alaskan oil pipeline, an air shock absorber for a Harley-Davidson motorcycle, and components that go in machines that take blood samples from test tubes, punch holes in the wings of a Boeing 787 Dreamliner and power wheelchair lifts on buses. National Manufacturing Day was created by Fabricators and Manufacturers Association two years ago to promote careers the manufacturing industry has to offer.
