Presented through a combined effort of NFPA and the Fluid Power Industrial Consortium (FPIC) of the Milwaukee School of Engineering, the recent Chicago NFPA/FPIC Regional Conference drew an audience of 50 and focused on practical presentations of Internet of Things (IoT) for fluid power.
The Chicago program featured:
- Adam Livesay of Elevat IoT talked about connecting components and machines to the cloud and the collaboration between the ecosystems. Adam highlighted case studies showing the collaboration between supplier, distributor/integrator, and customer/OEM, as well as the collaboration between the application, system, and ROI.
- Mark Densley of Emerson Automation Solutions focused his presentation on the data that is captured from various pneumatic components, analyzed, and turned into useful information. He suggested that the data can be used to predict failure and trigger calls for action before catastrophic failure occurs. The data is then stored and can be used by OEMs to increase aftermarket replacement sales.
- Johannes Kunze von Bischhoffshausen of Trelleborg Sealing Solutions discussed how Industrial IoT (IIoT) promises increased efficiency, quality and safety for fluid power systems. Connecting sensors to fluid power components and visualizing sensor values is not always enough. One of the biggest challenges in IIoT is turning data into actionable insights. He suggested that artificial intelligence, specifically machine learning, can help to solve this challenge. Machine learning gives computers the ability to learn, without being explicitly programmed. The presentation covered a theoretical introduction into machine learning and its application to realize cognitive sealing.
- Tom Price of Price Engineering closed the conference by sharing how machinery commoditization compels MOEMs to invest and differentiate with IIoT technology. The pathway to implementation and success is murky and complex. Tom explained that companies are looking to develop customer-centric business solutions and models that enable significant revenue opportunities. Tom went on to say that machinery manufacturers must first assess their capabilities and tech readiness which will help determine the scale and timeline of their IIoT strategies.
