In 2015, South Central College in North Mankato, Minnesota received a $23,000 Fluid Power Lab Grant from the NFPA Education and Technology Foundation. The school used the funds to purchase two cavitation simulators with accumulator modules. The new equipment was used during the recent fall semester by 34 students in the CMAE1526 course, part of the Mechatronics Program. Here’s what one of the students, Chris Wenner, has to say . . .
Why did you choose to learn about fluid power?
“The reason I chose to study fluid power is that it plays a large role in a mechatronics career. Fluid power is in the majority of manufacturing and production lines and equipment, and with a career path in maintenance and engineering that includes these processes, it is extremely beneficial to know how fluid power works.”
What did you like about working in the fluid power lab at South Central College?
“What I liked about working in the labs with the trainers was the fact that I was getting hands-on experience and was able to learn about fluid power with a direct look at how it works in the real world.”
What are your career aspirations? What type of fluid power job do you hope to get after you graduate?
“My career aspirations after graduating are to be able to get a job in manufacturing maintenance where I will be able to apply the things that I have learned in my fluid power classes during my college education in mechatronics.”
