Distributor Council Sponsored Negotiation Workshop a Success

Sponsored by the NFPA Distributor Council, the web-based Negotiation Workshop held September 9 with Red Bear Negotiations was a resounding success. The workshop provided information valuable to distributors members, which is one of the goals for the event content set forth by the Distributor Council, while also being useful to manufacturer members, as is the case with much of the Council’s sponsored content.

Red Bear’s Jason Mitchell led the full four-hour workshop, using interactive case study techniques to reinforce some key practices and principles of negotiation strategy, preparation and execution. The seventy participants were able to work in groups of two and four online to develop and role model a negotiation. Mitchell then did a comparison of outcomes, which varied widely, and techniques to drive toward improved outcomes, along with some of the psychology of negotiation underpinning these techniques. Twenty-eight of 29 responding to a post-event evaluation indicated they would recommend this session to others. The following are several comments from participants:

“Very well designed with interaction between parties of different views/businesses. Did not expect the time to go by so quickly.”

“The workshop was very informative and was presented in a fun format.”

“I loved the group work and how it was managed.”

“Very informative. I specifically enjoyed the record negotiating exercise and learning more about positioning and managing information.”
