New Fluid Power Research: Variable AC Hydraulic Pump/Motor

We’ve written before about the fluid power research projects coming out of the Center for Compact and Efficient Fluid Power. Ten new research projects have recently been selected for funding, and a number of these new projects were presented at the Industry/University Engagement Summit at Iowa State. One such project is the Variable AC Hydraulic Pump/Motor project, which was presented by Jim Van de Ven of the University of Minnesota.

Hydraulic systems today can best be classified as DC, or direct flow, hydraulics. This project will investigate the modeling, design, and development of AC hydraulic systems. This project will build upon the existing CCEFP variable linkage piston pump that is both compact and efficient even under low displacement operating conditions. It will also greatly expand the existing body of knowledge for applying existing variable displacement pumps to alternating flow AC hydraulic circuits, including multi-actuator systems.

This project is still in its initial stages. Industry is welcome to contribute to the project by donating radial piston pumps and check valves.

Watch for project updates as the project progresses.
