We’ve written before about the fluid power research projects coming out of the Center for Compact & Efficient Fluid Power (CCEFP). Ten new research projects have recently been selected for funding, and a number of these new projects have been presented on the CCEFP Webinar Series. One such project is the Portable Pneumatically Powered Orthoses project, which was presented by Guarav Singh, who is a PhD student, and Chen-Zhang Xiao, who is a Master’s student, both of whom study at the University of Illinois, Urbana Champaign.
The project is specifically focusing on the design and analysis of a soft pneumatic sleeve for arm orthosis. This will contribute to orthotic control mechanisms and clinical treatment strategies, both of which are areas that have significant potential for advancements. The final design will be lighter and more compact than the current and will have enhanced power and performance. In addition to making strides in orthotics, this research will also drive the use of compact fluid power technologies in other human-scale devices.
The research is still in its initial stages, and industry collaboration and input is welcome.
