I met John Stenz, CEO of FORCE America, at this year’s NFPA Annual Meeting in March. I could immediately see his passion for education and for giving students the chance to explore ideas and the tools to make good choices about their career path. And that is just what he and FORCE America did (in a big way) at the first Career Exploration Day at Northfield Middle School in Northfield, MN on May 19.
Approximately 600 middle and high school students attended. There was a fun and interactive presentation called the Career Game, which was about business and technical trade career opportunities. After that, the students visited booths and displays provided by roughly 30 area businesses and organizations. Inside the school they could try out NFPA’s hydraulic excavator, see videos of the Fluid Power Challenge, use FORCE America’s joystick and spreader control system like a video game to control a snow fighting vehicle, as well as interact with many other booths of businesses and trade schools. Outside, they could sit in the cab of a road grader or a dump truck and drive a dune buggy. They could lay bricks, learn about welding and also have a hot dog at the grill.
All in all, it was a great day for all of the students and the businesses that got to interact with them. Many thanks to John Stenz and FORCE America for putting this all together.
