Daman Completes Seventh Year as Fluid Power Action Challenge Host

2017 Daman Fluid Power Action Challenge Champions

Grand Champions – Jimtown Team

Daman Products Company held its seventh annual Fluid Power Action Challenge on March 3 at Bethel College. Jimtown Junior High took home not only the Overall Champion trophy, but also the Team Challenge Award. Other winning teams included:

  • John J Young Middle School – Machine Design Award
  • LaSalle – Portfolio Award
  • Jackson – Teamwork Award

Twenty-eight teams of four participated in the program this year, which began with Workshop Day on January 12. During Workshop Day, the students, who were from South Bend Community School Corporation, John J Young Middle School, Jimtown Junior High School, and South Bend Career Academy, were introduced first to fluid power and then to the “Challenge.” This year’s “Challenge” was to create a hydraulic or pneumatic machine to solve an engineering problem. The only materials available were wood, paper, glue, tubing, and syringes. On Challenge Day, students had only three hours to rebuild the machines they had developed and could only use their portfolios and work instructions to do so.

“I am a firm believer in improving education, developing leadership and encouraging innovation in our youth,” said Larry Davis, CEO of Daman Products. “The Fluid Power Action Challenge is a unique opportunity for students to solve a problem using real-life applications. It’s an experience they will never forget and will often refer back to later in life.”
