Base Your Decisions on Something Substantial with NFPA Stats

It’s my turn to write an NFPA news post this week. With deadline approaching this morning, I had absolutely nothing. Until I saw this article about the Institute of Supply Management’s (ISM) manufacturing index for August…

Normally news like this gets kicked over to our Econ & Stats guy, Eric Armstrong, to write something. But it’s every man for himself today. He’ll need to find his own material.

So, anyway, the ISM manufacturing index is a key indicator for the economy going forward, and for fluid power, particularly on the industrial side of the business.

As the article shows, the ISM index for August is well below year-ago levels, and falling.  (NFPA’s monthly Confidential Shipment Statistics indexes for fluid power are showing about the same).  Economists interviewed for the linked article are not expecting a turnaround soon, and early indicators for September are not looking any better. They note as well that the strong dollar is affecting U.S. based manufacturing.

Will this continue or not? Watch for NFPA’s next quarterly forecast, prepared by ITR Economics, when it comes out in the next couple weeks.  Weigh in with your opinion, and see the opinions of your industry peers, by participating in NFPA’s monthly State of the Fluid Power Industry surveys for manufacturers and distributors.

If you don’t participate, you have nothing.  Contact Eric Armstrong at NFPA (414-778-3372; to find out how to get something out of NFPA’s stats programs.
