FPIC logoOn Friday June 1, 2018, NFPA held its quarterly Fluid Power Industrial Consortium (FPIC) seminar series at Argonne National Laboratory in Lemont, Illinois. Having this half-day FPIC seminar at Argonne National Laboratory for the first time is significant because Argonne will be receiving funding from the Department of Energy for the investment of fluid power research. Also for the first time, NFPA members who could not attend the event in-person had the opportunity to tune in to the presentations in webinar format.

Presentations included:

  • Advanced Hydraulic Fluids for Enhancing System Reliability and Longevity| Paul Michael, Research Chemist, MSOE Fluid Power Institute
Michael presented on improvements in fluid life and hydraulic equipment reliability can be realized through the selection of hydraulic fluids that possess enhanced antiwear performance and thermal stability.
  • How Well Does Your Hydraulic Fluid Protect Your Hydraulic System?  Improving Hydraulic System Reliability with Specification Upgrades and Fluid Chemistry:  A Case Study| Betsy Butke, Technology Manager Industrial Products, Lubrizol Additives
Butke presented on improvements to hydraulic pumps with Bosch Rexroth’s introduction of an upgraded specification (RDE 90245) that includes pump testing at 450-500 bar to match newer hydraulic pumps that operate at pressures from 400 to 700 bar and beyond.
  • Science-Based Approaches to Reliable Fluid Power Components| George Fenske, Aaron Greco, and Ali Erdemir, Argonne National Laboratory
Fenske, Greco, and Erdemir presented on how the US Department of Energy will soon initiate collaborative R&D projects with its labs, academia and industry partners to improve system efficiency. The second topic they presented on focused on Argonne’s capabilities in synthesis and engineering of functional coatings such as novel catalytically active coatings that react in-situ with organize fluids to form protective films on sliding surfaces.

The next FPIC seminar will take place on September 7, 2018 (location TBD) and will also have the option for remote users to participate via webinar.

All NFPA members are able to attend the seminar for free, but members of NFPA’s Roadmap Committee, who assist us in maintaining the NFPA Technology Roadmap, are especially encouraged to participate. FPIC seminar topics provide the ideal opportunity to stay abreast of the technological advancements that will influence the direction of our roadmap.
