Fluid Power Lab Grants Making an Impact—A Progress Report

In 2016, Cleveland Community College (CCC) in Shelby, North Carolina received a $25,000 Fluid Power Lab Grant from the NFPA Education and Technology Foundation. The school is using the funds to purchase proportional valves to upgrade its existing hydraulic trainer and to purchase a new trainer.

CCC recently reported that its new and upgraded trainers are now in operation, exposing more than 60 students to hydraulics. This semester, the trainers are being used in the MNT 222: Industrial System Schematics class. Last semester, they were used in the HYD 110: Hydraulics/Pneumatics I course, which provided the students access to control valves, switching, and control devices and also helped them understand the operation of a fluid power system, including design, application, and troubleshooting. The continuing education department is also using the trainers for its short-term workforce training Industrial Maintenance and Robotics Academies.

Local industries partner with CCC on a regular basis by serving as advisory committee members and hosting apprentices and interns at their facilities.
